Marriott Resort Monsoon Gardens

Transforming Rain into a Sensory Experience

The Marriott Resort Monsoon Gardens in Coorg, Karnataka, takes inspiration from the region's unique monsoon climate and lush tropical forests to create a climatic responsive landscape design. Designed by Stephanie Wang of Design Morphology, this resort landscape showcases the beauty and excitement of the monsoon through innovative water features.

The Marriott Resort Monsoon Gardens stands out with its ability to transform rainwater into captivating water features. The design harnesses the abundant rainfall from the Arabian Sea, channeling, storing, and transforming the runoff into ponds, cascades, waterfalls, and fountains. The result is a resort that comes alive during the monsoon season, immersing guests in a magnificent water garden.

Operating much like an Italian water garden, the majority of the water features in the resort landscape are gravity-fed and sourced from rainwater. During the dry season, the fountains blend seamlessly into the landscape. However, when the monsoon arrives, the water features take on various forms, including water sprouts, cascades, dry fountains, reflection pools, and waterfalls. These features create an immersive theatrical experience that is hard to forget.

The design team, led by Stephanie Wang and Justin Yip, conducted extensive research to understand the site's climate, culture, user groups, terrain, vegetation, and history. This research allowed them to exemplify the sensory experience that attracts tourists to Coorg. By integrating the key features of the region into the design, the Marriott Resort Monsoon Gardens offers guests a truly unique and memorable experience.

Creating a robust water garden presented its own set of challenges. The design team carefully studied the site elevation and the resort's spatial hierarchy to determine the optimal placement of water features. This attention to detail ensures that the water features seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscape and enhance the overall guest experience.

The Marriott Resort Monsoon Gardens received the Bronze A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design in 2017. This prestigious award recognizes the design's outstanding creativity and resourcefulness. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, this design contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
